Garage door opener repair
Your opener runs, but the door doesn't move. Or the remote works from one car but not the other. Or the door reverses halfway down for no apparent reason. Opener problems come in a lot of different forms, and the cause isn't always obvious. Brenner Garage Door diagnoses and repairs all opener brands and models across the Valley. Most issues can be resolved in a single visit.
Common opener problems we fix
- The opener runs but the door doesn't move (stripped gears, broken trolley, or disconnected drive).
- The door reverses before fully closing (force settings, sensor issues, or travel limit misadjustment).
- The opener doesn't respond to the remote or wall button at all.
- The opener makes grinding, clicking, or humming noises.
- The door moves very slowly or struggles to lift.
- The lights on the opener blink but the door won't operate.
- The remote range has decreased significantly.
- The opener works intermittently or unpredictably.
How we diagnose and fix it
We start by checking the basics: power, remote batteries, and sensor alignment. Then we test the opener's motor, gears, drive mechanism, circuit board, and safety systems. We also check the door itself, because many "opener problems" are actually caused by a door that's out of balance, has a broken spring, or has another mechanical issue putting extra load on the opener. Once we've identified the problem, we explain it, give you a quote, and fix it on the spot in most cases.
Why this repair matters
Ignoring opener issues doesn't just mean inconvenience. An opener that's straining to lift a door wears out its motor and gears faster. An opener that doesn't reverse properly is a safety hazard. And an opener with a failing circuit board can behave unpredictably, opening or closing at unexpected times. Addressing the issue promptly keeps your system safe, reliable, and long-lasting.
Typical timeline
Most opener repairs take 30 minutes to an hour. Gear replacements and circuit board repairs may take a bit longer. We carry common replacement parts on our trucks for same-day service.
Repair or replace?
If your opener is less than 10 years old and the repair is straightforward (like a gear set, logic board, or capacitor), repair usually makes sense. If it's 15+ years old, requires an expensive repair, or is missing modern safety features, replacing it may be the better long-term investment. We'll give you our honest take based on your specific situation.
Pricing
Opener repair pricing depends on the issue and parts required. If the repair cost approaches the price of a new opener, we'll let you know so you can make an informed decision. We always provide an exact quote before starting work. Call for a free estimate.
Frequently asked questions
My opener hums but the door doesn't move. What's wrong?
This usually means the motor is trying to run but the gears are stripped or the drive mechanism has failed. The motor still works, but the power isn't reaching the door. It's a common repair and typically involves replacing the gear and sprocket assembly.
Can you fix any brand of opener?
Yes. We service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman, Linear, Marantec, and all other residential garage door opener brands. Regardless of brand, we can diagnose and repair it.
My remote works sometimes but not always. Why?
Intermittent remote issues can be caused by weak batteries, radio frequency interference, a failing antenna on the opener, or a remote that's going bad. We'll test the remote and the opener's receiver to isolate the problem.
The power went out and now my opener won't work. What do I do?
First, check that the outlet has power (plug in something else to test). If the outlet is on a GFCI circuit, the breaker may need to be reset. If power is restored but the opener still won't work, the surge may have damaged the circuit board. Give us a call and we'll take a look.
