Smart/WiFi garage door openers & myQ
Ever pull out of the driveway and wonder whether you closed the garage? With a smart opener, you can check from your phone and close it with a tap. Smart garage door openers connect to your home WiFi and give you full control from anywhere — open, close, monitor, and share access, all from an app. Brenner Garage Door installs and sets up smart openers across the Valley, and we can upgrade most existing setups too.
What is myQ?
myQ is the smart garage platform built by LiftMaster and Chamberlain, the two largest residential opener brands in the country. It's the most widely used smart garage system and comes built into most new LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers. If your opener already has myQ, all you need is the free app and a WiFi connection to start using it. If your opener doesn't have it built in, we can add a myQ smart garage hub to make your existing opener smart — no full replacement required.
What smart openers let you do
- Open and close from anywhere
- Forgot to close the garage before leaving for work? Close it from your phone. Need to let someone in while you're not home? Open it remotely. You have full control from wherever you are.
- Real-time status and alerts
- See whether your door is open or closed at any time. Get push notifications when the door opens or closes, so you know when the kids get home from school or when a delivery arrives.
- Scheduled close
- Set your door to automatically close at a specific time every night. If you forget to close it before bed, the schedule handles it for you.
- Guest and delivery access
- Share temporary or recurring access with house cleaners, dog walkers, or family members. With Amazon Key and myQ, you can even have packages delivered inside your garage instead of left on the porch.
- Activity log
- See a complete history of when the door was opened and closed, and by whom. Useful for keeping tabs on household activity or checking access after a vacation.
- Smart home integration
- Connect your opener to Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit (model dependent), IFTTT, and other smart home platforms. Build routines like "close the garage when I leave home" or "turn on the garage lights when the door opens."
- Battery backup
- Many smart openers include battery backup, so your door still works during power outages. In Arizona, monsoon-season storms can knock out power — battery backup means you're not locked out or stuck with a door you can't close.
Smart platforms we install and support
- myQ (LiftMaster / Chamberlain)
- The industry standard. Built into most new LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers. Free app, reliable connectivity, Amazon Key integration, and broad smart home compatibility. This is what we recommend most often.
- Aladdin Connect (Genie)
- Genie's smart platform. Offers remote control, real-time alerts, and multi-door support. A solid option if you already have or prefer Genie hardware.
- Smart retrofit kits
- If your current opener works fine but isn't smart, we can add a WiFi module or smart hub without replacing the whole unit. The myQ Smart Garage Hub, for example, works with most major opener brands — not just LiftMaster and Chamberlain.
Why smart openers make sense in Arizona
The Valley's extreme heat puts extra demands on your garage door system. A smart opener gives you practical advantages beyond convenience:
- Know your door is closed before the garage hits 150°F with the Arizona sun beating on it. An open garage door in summer can spike your energy bill and push your AC unit harder.
- Battery backup keeps your door operational during monsoon-season power outages — no manual release fumbling in the dark.
- Activity alerts let you know if the door opens unexpectedly, which matters when you're away during snowbird season or extended travel.
- Scheduled auto-close means you never accidentally leave the garage open overnight, when dust storms, critters, and heat are all working against you.
New installation vs. retrofit
If your opener is aging, we generally recommend a new smart opener rather than adding a retrofit kit to aging hardware. You get the latest motor, safety features, and seamless smart integration in one package. But if your opener is relatively new and works well, a retrofit hub or module is a cost-effective way to add smart features without replacing the whole unit. We'll assess your setup and give you an honest recommendation.
Pricing
Smart opener pricing depends on whether you're installing a new unit or adding smart capability to an existing opener. A retrofit hub is significantly less than a full opener replacement. We provide a detailed quote before any work begins — no surprises. Call for a free estimate.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make my existing opener smart without replacing it?
In most cases, yes. The myQ Smart Garage Hub works with most major opener brands manufactured after 1993. We add the hub, connect it to your WiFi, and you get app control, alerts, and scheduling without replacing your opener. We'll check compatibility during the assessment.
Does myQ require a subscription?
The core myQ app is free — open, close, monitor, and get alerts at no ongoing cost. Some premium features like video and advanced integrations may require a subscription, but the essential smart features are included.
Will a smart opener work if my WiFi signal is weak in the garage?
Smart openers need a reliable WiFi signal in the garage. If your signal is weak, a WiFi extender or mesh node in or near the garage usually solves the problem. We'll test the signal during installation and let you know if you need to boost it.
Can I control multiple garage doors from one app?
Yes. Both myQ and Aladdin Connect support multiple doors on a single account. If you have a two- or three-car garage with separate openers, you can monitor and control each one independently from the same app.
Do you set up the app and smart home connections?
Yes. We handle the full setup — installing the hardware, connecting it to your WiFi, downloading and configuring the app on your phone, and testing everything. If you want to connect it to Alexa, Google Home, or another platform, we'll walk you through that too.
