One-Piece to Sectional Door Conversion in Phoenix

An old one-piece door in Phoenix, too heavy for the homeowner to lift by hand, converted to a modern sectional door with a new opener in a single visit.

Completed September 2026 · Phoenix

What we found

This Phoenix homeowner called about an old one-piece garage door. A one-piece door is a single slab that tilts up and out as a unit, and this one had nothing to run it but a handle on the front and a padlock on the latch. Every trip in or out meant hauling the whole slab up by hand, and a door this large and heavy was more than the homeowner could operate properly. The fix was to retire the slab and replace it with a modern sectional door on a motor.

What we did

A sectional door needs an opening that can carry its tracks and hardware, and an opening built for a one-piece door isn't ready for that. So the first part of the job was framing the opening to support the new door. With the framing in, we installed the sectional door, which rolls up overhead in four hinged sections instead of swinging out as one slab, then mounted and programmed a new opener so the door runs on a motor. Start to finish, the conversion took three to four hours.

How it turned out

The homeowner went from wrestling a heavy slab by hand to pressing a button. The door now runs on the opener, and the crisp white long-panel look is a real step up for the front of the garage.
